Information

Who is running these workshops?

The workshops are being delivered by our team of tutors, with administrative and logistical support from additional volunteers.

You can contact us at admin@sqw.org.uk.

Who are the workshops for?

The workshops are aimed at developing and experienced string players (approximately Grade 5 standard and above) who would like to participate in string quartets.

The string quartet form is fairly well established, and we welcome violinists, violists and cellists to join us. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate alternative instruments at this time.

The workshops are based in Sheffield, and, in part, we hope to promote a string quartet community in the city, but players from the wider community are most welcome to come along and join in!

What can I expect on the day?

The workshop content will vary from session to session, but in general will follow start off with a general, workshop-style session for all participants, after which players will separate into pre-assigned ensembles and head off to dedicated rooms for rehearsal.

In general, rehearsal sessions will be 45 minutes, with break before and after to allow time for setting up and clearing away.

Our tutors will be on hand across the sight-reading and rehearsal sessions to guide and develop each ensemble, tailoring feedback to the players in question.

At the end of the day, players will have the opportunity to play through their selected work to all participants in the closing session.

What music will we be playing?

Our tutors will select, and arrange, a number of different string quartets for the ensembles to tackle on the day. You don't need to bring music with you, we will have copies prepared ready for you upon registration.

How do the sessions across the year relate to one another?

Our aim is to foster a String Quartet Community within Sheffield, and we see running a consistent series of workshops across the year as a means of supporting this.

That said, the content of each workshop is independent, and whilst we hope that people will continue with the programme, new players will always be welcome.

How can I keep up to date with what you're doing?

In addition to the mailing list, we also have a Facebook Group you can join here Sheffield Quartet Workshops on Facebook.

And, of course, we will keep this site regularly updated.
